70 email: news@printmonthly.co.uk July / August 2023 - Issue 343 “While guillotines are seen as a basic tool of the trade and have been around for centuries, even the most modern currency printers still use one and they are a prerequisite whether you are a small family craft printer or a global corporation,” Friedheim says. “Market-leading manufacturers such as BaumannPerfecta are still finding incremental improvements to ensure the next generation of guillotine is always an improvement on the last.” Development at Baumann is focused on two factors, Friedheim says. The first of these is flexibility of throughput, helping printers get a better return for their time across a number of printed products, without needing more floorspace to accommodate different types of solutions. Secondly, reducing repeating costs and overall lifetime costs of the cutting system. This includes developing new materials to protect the cutting edge such as BaumannPerfecta’s new cutting cells, reducing make-ready operation with barcode scanning and software solutions such as ‘Straight2Cut’, or developing ultrastrong gearboxes. “Further automation is available through ongoing development of assistive and collaborative robots,” Friedheim says. “First installed in the UK in 2018 the Baumann BASA and BASS systems have been under constant development and now represent some of the most productive cutting automation solutions in the post-press field – saving costs on labour while removing the human risk from cutting entirely.” The simple message here is to do your homework; research each machine you are interested in to ensure it will deliver exactly what you are looking for in a guillotine. With a whole host of options available to the market, printers are spoilt for choice in this segment! screen programmability, job memory storage, clear operator prompts, and fast knife-changes. “Other new developments include greater efficiency with the calculation of optimal cut sequences, as well as smoother operation by transforming a skilled and complex job that requires time and expertise to prepare and input into a simple exercise,” Keane says, adding: “Also consider reducing labour costs by adding a stack-lift, jogger, and unloader to enhance workflow and handle throughput faster.” Turning to what IFS has on offer, Keane highlights the BaumannPerfecta collection, which ranges from the BaumannPerfecta 80 to the BaumannPerfecta 225. They can be used as stand-alone machines or in combination with the BaumannPerfecta automation modules, as part of a complete cutting system. “They can manage a wide range of materials from paper, cardboard, foils, offset printing plates, or similar and ensure high-quality completion of an array of applications,” Keane says. For cutting B2/SRA2 and B3/SRA3 digitally printed sheets, IFS also supplies fully automated digital cutting solutions from Horizon with the SmartStacker and SmartSlitter and from Tecnau with its Stack 1212 and Stack 1010. Improving Technology Finally, Friedheim International partners with a host of manufacturers across the finishing sector.
